Where is Amherst, Nova Scotia, and how do I get there?

Amherst is on the border of Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, in Eastern Canada. It is a warm , friendly town of about 10,000 people that is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Tantramar marsh and the Bay of Fundy.

If you drive fifteen minutes in any direction from the studio and you’ll see the sea coast.  You do not need a car once you arrive in Amherst, there are accommodations and restaurants all with in a five minute walk from the studio. If you prefer to be picked up at the airport and delivered you can contact D and J’s taxi, next door to the studio, and talk to Bob, tell him you are coming to a rug hooking workshop. His phone number  902-667-8288.

Flying here is easy.It is fifty Minutes from the airport in Moncton, New Brunswick, and 1 hour and fifty Minutes from the Halifax International Airport. Both Moncton, and Halifax, are easily connected from most major cities in Canada and the United States. If you fly you might want to rent a car and drive around a little bit while you are here.

If you plan to drive we are right off the Trans Canada Highway,  exit 3 from the highway takes you right downtown, on Victoria Street. We are located at 33 Church Street, just five minutes off the Trans Canada Highway. For those who prefer the train, the Via Rail Train Station is just two blocks away from the studio.

More about small town life in Amherst on my blog I write stories and post pictures about the community here. You can read about Amherst and get an idea about the kind of community you’ll be visiting

What you need to bring

  • your hook and frame
  • a selection of wool/materials you like to work with
  • a digital camera comes in handy
  • a sketch book, with unlined pages

Creativity and Rug hooking is a beautiful blend and it is the basis of all the workshops at my studio. We learn by doing, and experiencing, by sharing ideas in a supportive and fun environment designed for adult learners. My goal is to offer you a playground of ideas, and a rich creative experience in a studio environment.

To register, contact Deanne at 1 800 328 7756 or register by adding a workshop deposit online. Specify which workshop you want to register for in the comments section of the order form and we will confirm your registration with you. A $75Ânon refundable deposit is payable upon registration. Deposits are for the specific workshop you register for and will hold your place for that workshop. They are not transferable to other workshops, or studio supplies should you cancel.

A few pictures of sweet small town Amherst so you’ll know where you are coming. Amherst is known for it’s beautiful stone building. The downtown sell has a core of small family owned businesses. My husband has a beautiful men’s wear store next to my studio Mansour’s Men’s Wear, there is a spa across the street, and a big active YMCA just a block away. There are lots of accommodations with in walking distance of the studio.

Hi Deanne, have just registered for October Workshop with $75 online deposit, wasn’t sure about where you indicated to choose workshop?? Hope it works out that I can attend, I guess I’d need to stay with Gwen & Jim on the nights of Oct 15, 16 & 17 – Laura

  3. Laura,we can lend you any frame you want. It would be great to have you. Gwen and Jim are great hosts at the Regent.

Hello Deanne, Just read your message regarding the 3 day workshop in connection with the NS Fibre Arts Festival, I am hoping to be able to arrange to come to NS from Wales for it, and to stay at Gwen’s The Regent if she has room for me. Do you think I might be able to borrow a 14″ round frame from someone as I’m restricted to one suitcase now, and I’ll likely buy materials when I arrive. Would love to attend the W&C as well. I’m attending the WonderWoolWales textile show at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society in Builth Wells, Wales April 26-28th, so hope to have some interesting photos and stories from that to share. Will be in touch, perhaps by phone to talk about a few details, will have to arrange flights prior to registering. I totally agree with the concept of showing joy in our rugs, it makes them even more of a delight to look at and touch. Best regards, and Blyddyn Newdd Dda, as they say here in Wales (Happy New Year) – Laura, in Anglesey

We are from Pennsylvania and stayed at the Victorian Motel recently while visiting Amherst and the the Rug Hooking Studio. Sometimes when traveling you need reasonable accomodations. We found the room very clean, and although it was not fancy, it suited our needs. The innkeeper was friendly, too.

  6. Jill, some people do like it! It is actually being turned i to small apartments i have heard.

  7. Jill says:

Not to be negative, but unless the Victorian Motel has undergone a big renovation in the last few months I would not send my worst enemy there.
There are so many wonderful places to stay in Nova Scotia, don’t waste your time in these tired musty rooms.( yes it ‘is’ in a great location, but be warned)
