this house is my container
Dear Diary, Can this been the same house that shook with energy as children ran circles from kitchen to dining to living rooms to back to kitchen. Can this be the same house where door bells rang steady somedays because there was a bustling studio in the back. Can this be the same house where eight pairs size 11 nikes littered the doorway and you had to climb over them to get in. It is indeed. … Read entire article »

resistance…retreats to cozy
Dear Diary, It seems I could never leave the house. We have had a couple of days of icy yards and roads and last night I had time dragging myself out for a few hours with friends. Once I did it was grand, but settling in here in this house with a wood fire under me is too cozy. I have started an abstract rug. I wonder something…is it the idea of abstract I like, or … Read entire article »

festival of twigs and lights
Dear Diary, I always think that there should be more winter decorating ideas. That we  northerners should have a “winter style” after we leave Christmas and head into the deep season. We should fill our houses with evening lights, and pretty bundles of one sort or another.  I have a set of tea lights and candles on my coffee table that I am leaving out for winter . I plan to buy some white flowers … Read entire article »

nests around the house
Dear Diary, is there anything better than a comfy chair? It feels so good to have a spot to curl up in. As I create spaces around me, whether it is a living room, or an office, I like to create a spot to curl up in. When we last visited my friend Cheryls’ house my daughter says it is like she creates nests everywhere. Isn’t that a nice idea to take the spaces around you … Read entire article »

tea; a bag in a cup
Dear Diary, a cup of tea for comfort…for a weak stomach…for a tired heart…for an achy back. Is there anything any better. My mother, whenever we went out never wanted tea, “There’s nothing like the one you get at home.” she’d say. It’s true I know that now. I come from a long line of people who drink their tea, with a bag in a cup. No fancy pots…just a tea bag, with water that has come … Read entire article »

awhile in the little garden
Dear Diary, This year I built myself a little walk with a few paving stones. It’s rough but I made it. I also planted three packs of sunflower seeds near the house and put out some boxes. I gathered moss from the woods for my window box, and when I take a few minutes to look at it all together, I think, “pretty good”. I’m no gardener but I can manage a few pots and … Read entire article »

seeing and feeling art
Dear Diary, I think one of the easiest places to find beauty is around your house. You know the light, you have laid things out the way you like them. I just bring into the house the things I like so that sets me off in a good footing. Searching for beauty is not always about getting a design idea. Searching for beauty is just getting to know what you like, how you respond to … Read entire article »

a nest of our own
Dear Diary, Today as I worked on a poppy rug, I just went to the garden to look at them as a bunch again. Then I picked a leaf. I could not pick a blossom. Too beautiful, too tender, I left them there. I picked the leaf and brought it to my frame to help me see the poppy as I hooked it. To understand the structure of the leaves, not just the red poppy … Read entire article »
