merry christmas
Dear Diary, the feeling of Christmas is really in the air. The shops are busy. There is even a dusting of snow around here. My date squares are made, some are even delivered. The salt fish has been bought for the annual making of fish and brewis for my sisters. All my presents have been bought and wrapped. There is a little magical feeling in the air, a freshness, an anticipation. My Christmas tree is … Read entire article »

a blessing is a lovely thing
Dear Diary, Iris Dement has a song called “Let the mystery be.” Which I have always loved. Her beautiful light voice carries the tune in my head sometimes when I wonder about God, and life. We might as well let it be, for answers are deeper than us. Last night I went to see Glen Campbell perform . As he left the stage, he kept repeating “God Bless You.” I say this all the time, … Read entire article »

It can be done in so many ways. I suppose on … Read entire article »

art is a blessing
Dear Diary, I believe in blessings. As a teenager when I moved here to Nova Scotia, friends would scoff at me because I said” God Bless” . I’d be getting out of a car at midnight, and I’d yell, “God Bless”,. They’d yell back, “God Bless you too” and laugh their heads off. They got me, but they didn’t get me. That’s okay. We do not need to “get” everything about each other. Those people … Read entire article »

a little praise for the wonder of it all
Dear Diary, praise comes in all forms. My house growing up was full of religious icons. The cross that laid over my parents’s bed now blesses my kitchen. My mothers little receptacle for holy water, is nudged in against my back door. Perhaps I look at them differently than she did, perhaps I do not. It does not matter. They are both reminders of her, and the need to lift my head in wonder and … Read entire article »
